SPEECH INTERVENTIONSThe following interventions are all tier 1 interventions. Please remember to allow time for teacher intervention to work and to document all strategies that you have tried with your students. Please also remember that it may take a month or longer to see that a strategy is working, especially with regards to speech.
If you see no improvement after implementing 3 - 5 interventions, fill out the referral form for a consultation with the Speech Therapist. All tier 2 and tier 3 interventions are implemented by the Speech and Language Therapist. |
Articulation• Repeat students error words correctly, stressing the error sound if possible
• Ask the student to repeat the word after you • Have the student watch your mouth when repeating a word • Provide good speech models • Use spelling words to help students establish correct productions of target sounds • Allow students to practice saying target sounds into a tape recorder • Emphasize error sounds wthout calling attention to the student • Exaggerate the endings of words during speech and reading activities • Determine a silent signal to alert the student to correct their speech error • Practice target sounds using a whisper phone |
Language• Encourage student to talk about things that they have done or are going to do
• Correct childs grammatical errors • Encourage students to answer questions about what they have read • Encourage students to talk about experiences and elicit specific information • Communicate at the child's level of understanding • Provide an appropriate language model • Praise correct communication skills • Use pictures or objects along with your comments/questions • Initially, accept non-verbal responses but encourage oral participation • Accept student's inappropriate verbalization but re-direct attention to subject |
Fluency• Listen to student patiently
•Keep eye contact with student • Don't interrupt the student while he is attempting to talk - wait for him to say it • Be aware of your facial and body expressions - Be positive - Be accepting • Encourage student to talk but don't force them to participte verbally • Talk slowly to the student, try not to be in a hurry • Find times when the student talks smoothly and encourage these • Create a stress-free speaking environment without interruptions |
Voice• Make notations of what problems there seem to be and when they were first noticed
• Discourage loud talking or yelling if a student has a hoarse voice • Limit background noises or sounds when student is speaking Tier 2
