- What, So What, Now What
Pounce/Pause/Bounce
- Teacher asks a question and “pounces on a student”, student answers the question, discussion takes place “pause”, then student “bounces” to another student.
Word Splash
- A small group of vocabulary words (mixture of known and unknown) are given (written or orally to check spelling) to students. Students are asked to write a story using all of the words. Student then share out stories to see who understands the meaning of the vocabulary words. This activity should be fun!!
Jigsaw - template
- Break an article into sections and have each person/group read their sections. The groups then share out to the whole group. This strategy allows a whole text to be quickly covered.
- Do not use just to get material covered
- Text needs to be easily digestible
- Novel in an hour
Written Conversation
- First student writes their thoughts then passes their paper on to someone else who build on previous thoughts. Continue passing paper to designated number of people. As an added step, the original writer can summarize all thoughts on the back of the page.

- Highlight everything in blue/red that you struggle with
Ticket Out the Door/Exit Slip
- One Sentence, One Phrase, One Word

Sorting Activities
- Randomly assign students
- Encourages collaboration
- Reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Allows students to answer in an open format
- Word problems, academic vocab, theme, setting, what are you being asked to do
- Open sort is more difficult than being given the categories to sort into
- Open sorts are a good prelude to writing
- Picture Sort - cut up pictures/have students sort; can sort by genre, character traits
- Close sort - give labels to students, helps with scaffolding
- Math - sort shapes by sides, angles, points/vocabulary/ pieces of an equation, then solve
- Grammar - sort parts of speech, vocabulary, characters for novels
Give 1 - Get 1
- Give one strategy or one lesson learned, receive one from a partner
- Write an alternative ending or write from an alternative perspective
Chalk Talk
- For content you feel the students are strong on
- Students walk around and add their thoughts to what is already written on chart paper or chalk boards
- Do a gallery walk when finished, do not linger
- Can share electronically using wordle or smartboard
